Chess Database www.chessgames.com A useful, comprehensive repository of world class games. While they offer a paid membership option with certain benefits, the database of games is available to everyone. 
Chess Tactics chess.emrald.net This is a nice, free tactics trainer to improve pattern recognition. The user should beware, though, as your tactics rating will go down sharply if you use too much time to think! 
Chess Interface www.babaschess.net Babas Chess is a completely free client for the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS),but can also be used as a stand-alone interface for reading pgn files. 
Stockfish https://stockfishchess.org/ This is the most powerful engine out there -- and it's absolutely free! NOTE: you will need to have an interface of some kind installed in order for the Stockfish engine to run (e.g. Babas Chess, Fritz, Chessmaster). 
Chess Tactics chess.com Chess.com has a nice database of problems. Though they offer paid memberships, free players can still use their server to play against other human opponents and take advantage of 5 free tactics a day. 
United States Chess Federation US Chess The official organization in charge of rated chess competitions for the United States. The website also contains useful information concerning basic rules of play and recent chess news.
